- _d_v_h_t_o_o_l is used to copy files to and from the volume header of disks.
- Formerly it had other functions also, but these have long been deprecated
- and have been removed.
-
- The disk volume header consists of two main parts: the partition table,
- and the volume directory. The volume directory is used to locate files
- kept in the volume header area of the disk for standalone use. The
- partition table describes the logical device partitions.
-
- You must be superuser to use _d_v_h_t_o_o_l.
-
- Invoked with no arguments (or just a volume header name,
- _h_e_a_d_e_r__f_i_l_e_n_a_m_e), _d_v_h_t_o_o_l allows you to examine and modify the disk
- volume header on the root drive interactively. The rrrreeeeaaaadddd command prompts
- for the name of the device file for the volume header to be worked on.
- This can be /_d_e_v/_r_v_h for the header of the root disk or the header name
- of another disk in the /_d_e_v/_r_d_s_k directory. See _v_h(7M). It then reads
- the volume header from the specified device.
-
- The wwwwrrrriiiitttteeee command writes the possibly modified volume header to the
- device.
-
- Invoked with arguments, _d_v_h_t_o_o_l reads the volume header, performs the
- specified operations, and then writes the volume header. If no
- _h_e_a_d_e_r__f_i_l_e_n_a_m_e is specified on the command line, /_d_e_v/_r_v_h is used.
-
- The following describes _d_v_h_t_o_o_l command-line arguments.
-
- ----vvvv Provides five options for modifying and listing the contents of the
- volume directory information in the disk volume header: ccccrrrreeeeaaaatttteeee, aaaadddddddd,
- ddddeeeelllleeeetttteeee, ggggeeeetttt, and lllliiiisssstttt.
-
- ccccrrrreeeeaaaatttt
- Allows creation of a volume directory entry with the name _d_v_h__f_i_l_e
- and the contents of _u_n_i_x__f_i_l_e. If an entry already exists with the
- name _d_v_h__f_i_l_e, it is overwritten with the new contents.
-
- aaaadddddddd Adds a volume directory entry with the name _d_v_h__f_i_l_e and the
- contents of _u_n_i_x__f_i_l_e. Unlike the ccccrrrreeeeaaaatttt option, the aaaadddddddd options do
- not overwrite an existing entry.

-
- ddddeeeelllleeeetttteeee
- Removes the entry named _d_v_h__f_i_l_e, if it exists, from the volume
- directory.
-
- ggggeeeetttt Copies the requested file from the volume header to the filesystem.
-
- lllliiiisssstttt Lists the current volume directory contents.

-
- NNNNOOOOTTTTEEEE
- Several megabytes of disk space may be required in the /_t_m_p directory
- when creating or adding files if the free space in the volume header is
- fragmented.
